My best childhood/adult friend Arlene's husband passed away May 19. I HAD to be there to support her and the family. He was a good friend of mine, too. Doug was a seminary and institute teacher and has authored several books about the Book of Mormon. According to Arlene, Doug was always looking for ways he could demonstrate the gospel in our lives. In fact, one of his books is titled Life's Lessons from the Book of Mormon. During Arlene's talk at his funeral (Yes, she spoke per his request), she said he may have gone a bit overboard this time. Doug died on a Wednesday, on Saturday their son was married in the temple, and the day of his funeral their daughter was due to deliver her 4th child. The entire plan of salvation in one week.
Because we were located in Nephi during our stay, the hubs and I decided to attend the Manti Temple. We had seen it many times but had never been inside. It was a wonderful experience.
We also made a quick trip to SLC to go to dinner with my sisters and their husbands. Then on the way home, we stopped in Flagstaff to drive with Margo to Pomerene for the Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day was spent doing the annual early morning Pomerene Cemetary clean-up. No grass to water or mow, just dirt and, thanks to our winter rains, an abundance of weeds. There must have been over 100 children, teens and adults working there. A lot of Rod's ancestors and family are buried there including his dad, 3 brothers, and 1 sister. We have our plots reserved, too. The local VFW post always has a touching ceremony. Then, the great breakfast of eggs, bacon and pancakes cooked and served right there in the cemetary. I love small towns!!! The afternoon was spent at Rod's cousin's house with extended family. He has a pool and even though we didn't swim, thanks to major cannonballs and big squirt guns by others, we did get rather wet. Rod even got into the act by repeatedly filling a squirt gun with ice water from the soda cooler and squirting the kids. It was a fun day.
